Christmas 2020 but w/ less waste

Growing up in a household of 6, Christmas day was always BIG. It was the BEST, being too excited to sleep in so you’d wake your siblings up, and then hassle mum and dad hardcore to let you start opening presents! But I also remember the garbage bags full of wrapping paper, toy boxes, plastic, ribbons etc. None of it is really used for that long before its disposed of, its kinda sad really. We could all be doing better- including myself. Here are a few things I’ll be being conscious of this festive season-

Make a christmas tree

Out of anything. Draw one and stick in on your wall. Use a pot plant/actual tree and decorate til your heart is content. Create one out of red and green beer cans. Obviously purchase a tree if you’ll have it for the next 5+ years! PS: I definitely wish my Xmas tree was a jacaranda! How beautiful are they.

Use anything else for wrapping paper

Wrapping paper is a waste of paper and money. Use news paper, re-use wrapping paper that you’ve stored in your cupboard from a previous gift you were given b/c you’re an eco warrior :P. Use an old pillow case(it add’s character). Get creative!

Secret santa

If you’re reading this and you too are from a big family you won’t be a stranger to this suggestion. It’s exhausting buying for so many people/why spend money on something that you know the receiver won’t LOVE?! My fam and I used a gift exchange generator app so no one knowwwwws who each other got… JK’s we all talk and have most prob spilled many beans. I love this idea though and it makes gift giving more fun.

Homemade cards

Self explanatory. Make them your own! Or get a touch note account and send your loved ones post cards for $2! Best site ever.

Eat all of the leftovers

This must be done. Is it even Christmas if you aren’t eating all of the same food groups for 5 days solid? There will be no waste! Absolutely the best part about Christmas though- cooking, food + fam! Bring it on.

Give

Donate something this Christmas. $5 to a charity, dry goods to a food bank or some old clothing items. You’ll feel better for it.

6 Things I wish they taught us in school

  1. Nutrition

I luckily had a fairly healthy upbringing with parents that spent money on ‘good’ food and cooked for their family every night. But if this was implemented more during school/at an early age we’d all be better off in the long run. I’ve heard the quote “three times a day we need a farmer”, yeah we do. Three(generally speaking) times a day we make a decision on what we are fueling our bodies with. We’ve all seen those kids(unfortunately) that seem as though they’ve had zero nutritional advice from their parents/school(Coca cola @ 8am). On that note though- when their parents have no clue what our bodies need and what they don’t, how can we expect them to know any better? When we know better, we do better.

2. How to manage our finances

This would have been SUCH a helpful one. We all deal with different finances at different stages of our lives. But even being taught how to budget, save, do our taxes, how to save for and purchase property etc. I don’t recall being taught any of this… and then you become an adult!

3. How to change a tyre

Anything car related would have been helpful too. How to service your vehicle/change a tyre. Still something i have no idea how to do, lol!

4. A language

I’m sure a lot of schools around the world made learning a language compulsory. My school surely didn’t. How incredible to be bilingual or even trilingual!!! So helpful when wanting to travel/work abroad. Second languages look so great on resumes also. I am now learning Spanish and I love it!

4. Confidence

If there’s anything school for me didn’t help with, it’d be confidence. Large groups of people. Public speaking. Unconstructive criticism from teachers and fellow students. I definitely can’t remember any classes that helped me become more of a confident person. I hated feeling like I was being moulded in a certain way and being misunderstood. And we all know that confidence is something that can make or break us later on in life! I’d say having a class a week where students build each other up, encourage, compliment etc could possibly diffuse lack of confidence whilst going through school. But hey- bullying is such a massive issue in school systems these days so I’m stumped on how to resolve any of this.

5. Your attitude changes your reality

This. I’ve learnt this in the past 4 or so years but was absolutely a much more negative person prior to that. What we tell ourselves has such a massive impact on how our lives play out. Optimism is the best alternative.

6. You will go through career changes

Things aren’t how they used to be. I meet 50 year old’s that have decided they no longer want to be in the field they are in and they are back to studying something else. Our priorities are always changing and we are always evolving. We are HUMAN. I don’t know many people that are crazy in love with their jobs and want to commit to their areas of expertise for 40-50 years. It’s healthy to want to upscale, improve and learn something new.

All well and good for me to take a dig as I am certainly no curriculum inventor day by day, haha. But its crazy how many essential skills we need later in life and have no idea where to start. This blog has me so glad I’m out of a schooling environment- no thank you! We learn insane amounts when we leave. SCHOOL OF LIFE baby. Ciao! Tull x

Choooze the right shoe’s

As long as they’re not croc’s, you’ll be fine. Kidding but not really. Comfortable shoes to travel in make or break your trip.

  • BIRKENSTOCKS

Ya didn’t hear it here first but i’m going to mention these absolute godsends once again. They are on the more of a pricey purchase but they last forever, are so good for our feet and postures and are sustainable(don’t have to purchase rubber thongs every 6 months… or worry about blow outs for that matter). They’re pleasant on our lowest limbs that do ever so much for us aka carry us across the world and can wear with any outfit. WIN WIN WIN.

  • Don’t take shoes you won’t actually use

Be realistic with your shoe packing. Shoes are generally bulky and awkward sized items to pack not to mention TAKE US ALOT OF ROOM! I once took hiking boots tied onto my backpack while travelling for 1 month and only used them ONCE- what a pain in the arse they were to carry around. Note to self: never do that again. If anything like winter boots, hiking boots, water shoes are needed on your travels you could always hire!

  • Comfortable socks and bandaids

Splash a bit more cash on socks/double sock if you are doing intense walking on your travels. Bandaid’s can most likely be bought anywhere in the world but good to have on hand if you ever feel blisters approaching!

  • A decent pair of workout shoes

Money well spent, always. These will keep you active on your trip at the same time as keeping your feet happy. Brands I like are Sketchers, Asics and Nike. (Also Converse if they count). If you’re in Australia- buy these brands anywhere else lol, they’ll be cheaper.

  • A pair of something cheap to shower in

If you’re hostelling, you’ll most likely want to keep something on your feet while you shower… just in case. Cough, hygiene. This is something you could purchase while you’re away or take with you.

6 Things I love about Australia

Gods country, right? Aren’t we lucky to have these wide open spaces, breathable air and some of the freshest produce around. A big country with a small population and ALOT to give.

  1. What is a crowded space?

Unless you live in one of our 7 main cities, Sydney being the most populated at just under 6 million(hard to believe) you probably won’t feel claustrophobic all that often. I’d like to think alot of Aussies dont even have neighbors, lol! So much space to roam, camp, frollick and have beaches to yourself. It’s such a free feeling and i hope this doesn’t change anytime soon, We’re such an island.

2. Our beaches

Are like nowhere else… We don’t have many different ‘textured’ beaches like black sand or pebble beaches. But is there anything more perfect than a white sand beach with sand so high in silica that it squeaks? We are pretty lucky. A warm late 20degree day, some fresh fruit, a few beers and LOTS of sunscreen, heaven. And like I mentioned before, it wouldn’t be unheard of to have the beach to yourself. My favourite beaches are Rainbow beach/Double Island(QLD), Fraser Island(QLD) and Cable Beach(WA). All of these beaches never disappoint and are so relaxing so spend a few hours at. Apparently if you visited one Australian beach everyday it would take over 27 years! That’s a lot of exploring to be done. Also notice so much less pollution than beaches i’ve visited O/S, we aren’t perfect though and when we see anything that doesn’t belong on the coast we should always take it with us- hey πŸ˜‰

3. Our coffee

Again I think we create better coffee than anywhere else I’ve been. You’ve probably heard the term ‘coffee snobs’, yep that’s us! So much love, skill and pride is put into barista work here in Australia… aaaand we pay a lot for it! But hey its worth it. An airport almond cappuccino was my absolute priority when I flew in from North America(years ago, tear).

Have had a few coffee’s doing this beautiful national park walk. Talk about the most enjoyable morning workout- ever.

4. The people

Australians are fun. Australians are laid back. Australians don’t mind a cheeky party. Australian love to travel. Tick x4. Is there anything more you’d want out of a person? I really do mean it though, I’d like to think we’re a helpful and friendly bunch. If you were stuck on a highway/needed directions I’d like to think majority of the country would go out of their way to help in some shape or form. I also love that no distance seems too far- maybe not everyone has this outlook but being from the outback a 5 hour road trip for one night is nothing! Count me in.

5. Endless summers

The weather I’d say is up there with reasons people move to/stay in Australia. We very rarely cancel plans due to snow storms/hail showers etc. The sun is basically always out(ok this may not be true in all states, but in QLD it sure is) We complain when jeans and a long sleeved shirt are required for a day out, lol! Wouldn’t go swimming at a local beach during the winter when its 25 degrees though, if you did this I’d consider you mentally unstable x

6. Difference in states

Going to a different state is like headed to another country. They are all so unique and individual in a good way! Headed to Kangaroo island, South Australia? Heck no. Most Australians probably haven’t been! But Las Vegas… sure! It really is the case, haha so ridiculous. You really could spend your lifetime travelling this gorgeous, vast continent. Just ask any retired Australian 60+ or foreigner under 30 :P. We could all put more effort into seeing our backyards, now that we can’t- don’t we all want to?!

6 Things I’ve learned attempting plastic free July

1. ITS EVERYWHERE

This is something I did realise prior to the challenge but it has absolutely been engrained in me more so now. How’s the guilt walking into the supermarket and seeing more than half of the fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic(unnessecary) as well as hummus, biscuits, breads, frozen berries, PB, dried fruit, grains, pasta etc etc etc could literally go on forever.

2. Farmers markets are the way to go

This makes such big difference in a number of ways:

-Supporting local business’ which I am so for post Australian bushfires and mid pandemic. They deserve our dollar. Not these overseas multi million dollar companies

-Its better quality and I really do think better budget wise

-A whole lot less plastic, I still see a ridiculous amount of items such as mushrooms in a plastic bag with a plastic tie right next to a paper bag full of mushrooms? But generally I think there is less plastic. I’ve even asked stall holders if they’ll recycle the container/plastic bands if I buy the produce and they’ve been fine with it. Unsure if this is okay during covid but hoorah for less landfill.

3. So many people are unaware

I am 25 this year and i’d like to assume most people I associate myself with (20-35) have a pretty good understanding around single use plastics… definitely not the case. It’s really hard biting your lip/not overreacting because NONE OF US ARE PERFECT. But to see people still getting plastic straws with their drinks whilst out or using glad bags/cling wrap on a daily basis….. WOT πŸ™ these people unfortunately don’t know any better/ the repercussions this has and that’s OKAY. We all could do with more education on this topic but the more we work together and share the knowledge the better off we will be. “Its not about all of us being perfect, but all of us being imperfect” I love that quote. And that is where we will see change.

4. Cornstarch tooth brushes are the BOMB

Again like many other humans that are lucky enough to have the money to buy oral hygiene products I have been buying plastic toothbrushes for years. They say we go through 300 toothbrushes in our lifetime. That’s a whole lot of plastic sticks chilling on beautiful coastlines around the world. I’ve also read that plastic tooth brushes take 400 YEARS TO BREAKDOWN compared to cornstarch toothbrushes taking just 12 months! Bamboo are a good idea too but cornstarch seem to last longer, feel more sturdy and keep cleaner! Personal preference.

5. Let glass jars be your bestfriend

Glass jars are amazing! I’ve been using them for homemade coffee scrubs, pot plants, toothbrush holders, trail mix containers, iced coffee cups, bobby pin accumulators lol and to store all of my dry goods in the pantry! If you can ever purchase something eg: peanut butter in a glass jar over a plastic container- do it! So useful in the long run.

6. Every small difference counts

Pick up that chip packet that is making your left eye twitch or that mcdonalds cup(are they not everywhere?!) on your morning walk. If we all had the mentality ‘someone else can do it’ what would get done?! You’ll feel better for it, our streets will be looking more pristine and mama earth will thank you for it!

How to: backpack healthier

I used to think of holidays/trips/vacations as a time to ‘binge’ and ‘eat whatever I wanted’. But when you happen to be away for longer periods of time this gets very old, very quickly. I’m sure we can all agree that food and trying different cuisines is the best part of travel(and the reason a lot of us do!). But when we are making better food choices and not over consuming we do end up enjoying our time away to the fullest extent! Peace out to feeling lethargic when there is so much we want to see and do. Here are a few things I’ve learnt with more recent trips πŸ™‚

  • Eat something green everyday

Definitely not super hard to achieve, and pretty easy to add to one meal of your day- but this will help with the upkeep of essential vitamins and minerals. Have a juice or smoothie with some kind of melon/spinach in the morning or add a side of buk choy to your dinner. So beneficial for our digestive systems and hydration!

  • Stay hydrated

Easy to achieve but also easy to forget. I will admit its harder in countries with foreign water systems(the plastic hurts our hearts, I know) but hydration, skin health and not passing out due to heat exhaustion is important too. Where you can- refill the plastic bottles. And where you cant- purchase and do your best to recycle. I’d even aim for 4 litres of water a day whilst backpacking, so much walking and if you happen to be like me… the occasional cuppla lunchtime beers. Clear spirits with soda and beers are probably your best options if you are going to… over indulge.

  • Rethink over indulgence

I’m all about making the most of free breakfasts at hostels and love a good buffet splurge every now and then. But possibly limiting REALLY over indulging in these free meals to once/twice a week will help curb that calorie intake and getting into a bad routine at the start of the day. Because when we eat shit in the morning= we generally eat shit for the rest of the day. Opt for all of the beautiful fresh fruit on offer, yoghurt and vegetable stir fries/soups if you happen to be in Asia, yummm.

  • Take a pack

Suitcases are all too easy, and kind of inconvenient if your hopping on and off multiple types of transport. Taking a pack travelling means you’re constantly carrying a bit of weight and its keeping you strong. Plus you can put any important documents/extra money in the pocket against your back- ain’t no pick pocketer getting in there.

  • Don’t Uber

We generally have extra time on our hands while we are away(depending on the trip). Walk to and from, you’ll see more of the region you are visiting and more walking= more calories burned= extra room for a second lunch. Cheering.

Hike when you can, swim when you can, go to yoga when you can. Make it a priority to move everyday while being away! You’ll see more of the gorgeous area that you are visiting, it doesn’t cost a cent and your body will thank you for it!

Big city life

I grew up in a small town of 10,000 people in Northern Australia. Remote, personal and secure.

From my hometown I moved to a mountain town in North America of roughly the same population> to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia, slightly more densely populated> onto a mountain town of roughly 15,000 on the south island of New Zealand> to a town on the coast of Western Australia that was a bit smaller than my last destination. Therefore have never lived anywhere with 30,000+ people living in the same area. Then we decided to move to Brisbane…

It was hard. I’d consider myself quite an easily adaptable person. I love meeting new people, seeing new areas and changing up my work places. We signed a lease for a one bedroom apartment in central Brisbane and this in itself I had never experienced. I’ve always rented rooms from friends, friends of friends etc. And always off the books. I felt a bit stuck and obligated to stay in one area for a certain amount of time, as I’ve always had the freedom to pickup and leave whenever I felt like it. I made heaps of friends at my new workplace but I was worth more than the pay and I felt anxious going- again have never struggled with anxiety until, you guessed it… moving to the big smoke.

The first three months I had heaps of adjusting to do. Not having housemates to come home to. My partner was working away again so not being able to see him during the week and once again being away from my family, as I’d probably seen them more than ever in mid/late 2019. Going to be honest here and I know a lot of other ‘travellers’ will pick up what I’m putting down. Being away from my family for a few years and not seeing them face to face I guess I was used to the distance as such, and keeping in mind my fam are legends when it comes to communication/visiting me wherever I am in the world. They’re never not putting in the effort and I’d like to think it’s reciprocal. But after seeing my sister get married, my dad for fathers day for the first time in maybe three years, my brothers both turning ‘legal’ and seeing them in between holidays I started to realise what I was missing out on and had to get used to being away from them once again. Sidenote: 100% my choice, not having a pity party.

It’s funny with age how we really start to prioritise what’s important. I’ve always loved my family but have never felt that strong desire to spend 24/7 with them and I’m sure they feel the same. As I’m getting older though, (lol ripe age of 24) I find myself appreciating them so much more. Probably more than I ever have. And I think that’s beautiful. Its also beautiful having a family that supports your decisions to move around constantly and live the life you want to live. Maybe they prefer it this way… I joke.

I obviously considered going home many times. Three months in though something clicked. I really started to enjoy being in the city. Not that I didn’t try to enjoy it prior, but I think it just took time. I joined a gym that I loved, made even more mates, left my job and did something different. Going to say though that moving metropolitan was my hardest move to date. The noise that a city creates, the ambulances, air pollution, seeing SO many different faces on a daily basis. I just felt on edge constantly. If you’ve just moved to a city and are struggling I FEEL YOU. It is definitely not the most natural way of living nor something humans should be used to. Being surrounded by buildings, excess light pollution and the concrete to grass ratio. But I am such an advocate for change also. I live for it. And I do think that we cant knock these things before we try them. I feel stronger for staying and i’m so glad I stuck it out. I have just moved into a gorrrrrrgeous two bedroom apartment in a new area with my boyfriend + bestfriend, started hairdressing again at a salon that I love, have a great group of humans around me(really really great) and im feeling happy, healthy, good in my own skin and best of all- not anxious.

I never thought I’d be saying this but I LOVE Brisbane and am really enjoying being here- for now πŸ™‚ Good things really do take time and we need to be patient with ourselves. Nothing lasts forever and we always have the power to make change/different choices in any given situation.

The convenience of this city, the beautiful gardens and produce markets, the array of jobs on offer(pre covid), having an airport close by(again, pre covid this was helpful lol), the different cuisines, selection of transport options, so many new friends to make and you knew I was going to say it *cough* Uber eats. I’m enjoying it. Can’t say I’ll spend the rest of my life here, never say never though right? Its home for now.

Now for the Covid cases to completely minimise(we are doing really well in Australia) so that we can get out and explore more of our own backyards!

One piece of advise from me though would just be give it a go. What do you have to lose, really? I think we always gain something from moving to different areas. Places to explore and contacts to meet. Plus we learn so much about ourselves.

What advice would you give to someone when they’re moving somewhere new? Tips? How long would you stay before you picked up and took off again? This isn’t really a travel related blog as I feel semi uninspired due to not being able to book/plan anything right now but it feels almost therapeutic for me to type out. 5 Tips to save for trips

It feels kind of ironic writing a blog about something ‘finance’ related due to the ‘rona and being semi unemployed myself… lets ignore that though πŸ˜‰ here are 5 tips that have helped me save money QUICK in the past, enjoy!

1. MOVE BACK IN WITH YOUR PARENTS

If you’re wanting to save for a longer trip I would highly recommend this. The money us millennials spend on rent is CRAZY! So if there is a way to cut your rent in half(or maybe you’ll be lucky enough not to have to pay anything at all) definitely make the move. Even if its only a few months. Probably not the most ideal situation for most of us but hey- its only temporary. Parents are generally super on board when it comes to helping us achieve goals like this anyway, I know mine are!

2. START SAYING NO

Unfortunately, especially with funds; we cant have our cake and eat it too. We really need to prioritise what’s important, and in this case its having enough coin to feel secure going away with! Going out every weekend isn’t going to impact our bank accounts in a positive way. Just say no. Your true friends will understand. Obviously don’t become too anti-social, but being home means you aren’t spending money(also say no to online shopping). Suggest different ideas to your friends, do a workout in a park together rather than paying for a hefty spin sesh, go on a picnic, invite friends to yours for a few beverages, visit a free museum etc. Do anything but go out for food and drink.

3. PACK YOUR LUNCH

This does go hand-in-hand with tip 2. But I’d say in Australia its not often you could buy lunch for under $15. A standard 5 day work week you’d be spending $75 on food… that’s a zip lining tour in NZ! If you didn’t buy lunch during the week for 6 months you’d save $1,800… return flights to South America! You get my gist. It adds up. Lunches are so easy to make and generally a lot healthier than what you’d purchase out anyway. Less take out bought also means less landfill. Beneficial for your wallet and the environment. Sold.

4. WALK MORE

Whenever you can during this ‘saving period’ do whatever you can to walk from A to B. This may not always be possible depending on where you are living, climate etc. But walking costs nothing and is so valuable for our health. If you have the time try to avoid driving/paying for public transport/Uber. And I would say you’ll be doing a mass amount of walking when you head away so this will prepare you for what is to come. More walking= more time to listen to travel related podcasts like my millennial money. Exercising + learning = winning.

5. HAVE A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT

Probably the hardest task for us all… but probably the most rewarding. Sticking to budget you’ve promised yourself you’d stick to does wonders over time. Determine a realistic figure you can put away weekly, whether its $100 or $500. Just make sure you do this consistently. No if’s or but’s about it. Don’t cave for anything. It’ll be so worth it when you’re on the tarmac about to take off to your dream destination. You’ve got this!

This one time… in Guatemala

The only(known) hot waterfall in the world that flows into a body of cool water. This was incredible and needed after so many cold ‘suicide’ showers

A few years ago i flew to Guatemala city for a month with a mate I was living with in Canada. We basically had return flights booked and not much else. Was such a great way to do it as it was low season when we visited in October. Guatemala was a country I didn’t even know existed until we found cheap flights one day.

Guat’s had really good coffee, super friendly little(emphasis on both friendly and little lol) locals, it was so lush and green(reminded me of being back at home in the tropics!) and a VERY cheap country to travel. Wasn’t for the faint hearted though. It got hot. It is an extremely poor country. There wasn’t really a garbage system and go to transport options are basically busses(we had a 13 hr trip one day, never again). Wouldn’t change a thing though, such a memorable experience.

Blissing out after leaving the start of Canadian winter behind for black sand beaches and 30degree weather

My friend and I had previously done a bit of travel before this trip, but we weren’t oblivious to the fact that we were in what would most likely be considered a third world country. We were going to see some sh*t…

After being in town one day, we decided we’d attempt to walk back to our accommodation(a lot further than we had anticipated) and it started to get a little dark. A Toyota prado(boujee) pulled up beside us and offered us a lift, of course we said yes- it was a free ride with a stranger in a foreign country! Be crazy not to(wouldn’t recommend ppl). We get in and this local 50+ man is smiling but also shaking his head at the same time. We couldn’t really converse as not many locals knew English and we had minimal Spanish. Our driver started saying “arma, arma” which we knew was gun in Espanol… he literally ends up pulling this weapon from under his seat and waves it around. Our hearts sank… He could have killed us then and there. Turned out he was just warning us that it wasn’t a super safe area and lots of people were armed. Makes sense, it was Central America after all. He dropped us to our destination and we couldn’t stop thanking him and attempting to put Quetzal’s(local currency) in his console. He wasn’t having a bar of it and didn’t want a cent of our money. What a legend.

After 478739 bus rides, we were sooooo over it. Probably myself more than my mate lol! We stopped at a hostel on the water for a cold brew. We ended up meeting an older bloke named Guy. Considering he 1) spoke English 2) was Canadian 3) had a bloody infectious personality- we ended up really getting along. He informed us he was headed to Belize in a few days via the water. Offered us two seats on a boat not a bus, we were in. Syd(mi amigo) and I didn’t actually end up telling our families what we’d decided just errrr… incase things went south. I texted my siblings and my parents a short and sweet ‘love you’ before we left the mainland as we didn’t have any service on the boat for four days. Not going to lie I was definitely nervous during the first night we had on the boat, and when I say boat it was basically a catamaran- it was bloody nice. We all had our own rooms and I made sure I locked mine. Turns out Guy was all too much fun. He’d had previous paying passengers(charged us maybe $200US, cheap) so he was super hospitable and quite the chef! We spent everyday playing music, tanning on the front nets, drinking beer and smoking joints. It was a damn wonderful time. A couple from Melbourne ended up joining us on the boat as well as a crazy Norwegian staff member/sidekick of Guy’s(shoutout Jules, Layla + Ruben) We all had a blast!

Guy is definitely yelling at us here for ‘steering wrong’ lol. Note that i apparently needed a pillow to sit on? Haha

After arriving in Belizean waters, we stopped at a very unofficial office in Ambergris Caye and handing our passports over. We got them back and headed to Caye Caulker, probably the coolest little island on earth. But that is a whole different story…

Looking back things could have gone either way, but spontaneity and taking soon to be friends up on offers like these definitely make(or break) your travels. It’s pretty crazy how much trust we can put into people we’ve briefly met, just go with your gut feeling I guess. Ended up that Guy our wild captain was in a boat accident later that year and unfortunately passed away. To think if we’d declined his proposal we wouldn’t have ended up spending a week with one of the most ridiculously insane people i’ll most likely ever come across. He was SO full of life, lived it right that’s for sure.

I would travel back to Guatemala 100% and cant wait to. I loved how unexpected and unpredictable the whole trip was. Made friends I’ve been lucky enough to see since, ate some really good + also really basic food, made me appreciate all of the small things we take for granted in our commonwealth countries, drank really cheap booze, picked up alot of Spanish along the way, got a good tan and most of all… HAD A BLOODY GOOD TIME!

How to: survive a long haul flight

Something I think we’ve all dreaded once or twice. There’s something fairly uncomfortable about being crammed into economy(which lets be real, its most of us- including myself holaaa) for 10+ hours. But unfortunately its something that needs to be done. And half a day flying is nothing compared to the months on the water our ancestors had to undergo to get from country to country… we really don’t have it that bad. But hopefully this blog will give you a few tips on how to make flying slightly more enjoyable.

  1. Decent headphones– I recently got gifted airpods for Christmas(so so lucky) and they are a game changer. They’re so comfortable to wear/fall asleep with and you need something to block out those crying babies(worst)
  2. Podcasts– are an actual godsend on long trips. I find they keep me entertained more than music but download as many podcasts/ playlists that you can before your flight! Don’t rely on the airline to provide you headphones or a screen to watch, a lot of the time they don’t provide what you thought would be provided. Podcasts I am loving are- Happy hour with Lucy and Nikki, Plantproof, KIC and Casefile true crime. They will keep you occupied without a doubt
  3. Baby wipes– not the most eco friendly whatsoever but to give your oily face a wipe over before you land or even use a few on your seat prior. Makes all of the difference having these babies on hand. Hygiene rules
  4. Your toothbrush– speaking of hygiene. Even if you can’t take toothpaste on with you- it’s something. No one like furry teeth. Helps you feel SO fresh and human
  5. Something warm– planes get cold. I always feel cold haha. So i’d be taking a light blanket in my carry on. Because no one should have to pay $20+ dollars for a rug on a plane. Such a rip off. Same goes for neck pillows at the airport. Be organised. Don’t waste your precious travel money
  6. Something to assist with some shut eye– I’ve taken sleeping pills on flights before but haven’t needed them luckily as I’ve realised I can sleep anywhere(hope this never changes ha) but even a valerian tablet/something stronger if you’re worried you wont catch any Z’s. I love taking peppermint or lavender oil on with me too. Even pack in some chamomile tea and ask for hot water. Or even *cough* an edible prior. Get comfy.
  7. Reading material– this is the perfect opportunity to finish a really good book or even grab a few magazines at the store before the airport(half the price). Reading is time consuming, calming and will hopefully put you to sleep
  8. Comfortable plane attire– wear trackpants and a comfy shirt. Or a maxi dress. People that wear jeans on planes cannot be trusted(my worst nightmare). Chuck your hair in a bun and sport a naked face. Get cosy
  9. Water– it sucks being that person that has to ask others to move so that you can go to the bathroom. But being dehydrated when you arrive in a foreign country in a totally different timezone is worse. Take a big bottle ’cause again most of the time airlines wont provide these or charge you an arm and a leg. I once got charged $3.50 for a cup of hot water, tf.

Do your research when it comes to layovers and airline options, and weigh up your time vs money situation. It would be the dream to fly business and not even blink at the price. But I personally cant justify paying 5+ the economy seat. I’d so much rather spend those extra dollars on accommodation, food and a few too many cheeky midday cocktails. I have heard along the grapevine that booking flights tend to be cheapest on Tuesdays at midnight, so maybe give that a go also… Not that many of us will be flying for a while! Man I hope airlines don’t cave and there continues to be competition held within airway companies. Fingers crossed. Things are looking up. All my love x
