The truth about your hairstylist

Having been in this industry for almost 10 years, something that I can absolutely confirm is- your hairstylist cares, alot!

I can’t say I’ve come across a collegue that doesn’t care about their work or their clients. In saying that though, It’s a tricky job and so many things are often overlooked. We need to be personable, have great communication skills, up to date technique, be able to basically read our clients minds in terms of the aesthetic outcome they are wanting- and these days that’s almost HARDER with all of the styled/edited/photoshopped hair inspiration photos that can be found on every social media platform! Yep, then we’re expected to recreate said look using the canvas infront of us. Hairdressing is a LOVE job. We hairdress because we thrive off human interaction and connection and because we want our clients to walk out feeling 1000 times more confident then when they first sat in our chair.

I don’t know anyone that hairdresses for the money. It’s not why we get into the line of work we do whatsoever. Hairstylists in Australia are still paid minimun wage, which is quite frankly fucked considering how much passion, love and hardwork goes into what we do. Everyday.

Your hairstylist doesn’t just care about you a lot, they think of you, a lot. The amount of times I think about my clients out of work. If I had a dollar… What recipe I’ll use on them next time, whether they were a hundred perfect happy with their last session etc… the list is endless! I feel like I think about my clients when I wake up and before I go to bed.

Your hairstylist cares, alot.

It annoys me when I hear people saying how expensive salons and the product they provide and educate their clients with, is. You get what you pay for. One more time for the people in the back. You get what you pay for. We spend alot of time with you and on you. Time is money. And once again, hairstylists aren’t on the best wages. So dont complain to us πŸ˜‰ On another note, hair is something that you wear- every.damn.day. It is with you 24/7. I personally take pride in the way I style my hair, as well as the health and integrity of it. Hair is important and we are so lucky to have it. Not to mention the opportunities to chop, change and care for our hair. We are also very lucky to have loving hairstylists all around the globe that care about our requests and appearances as much as we do. Don’t complain to your hairstylist about spending $300 on your hair every 10 weeks. We’ve all spent more money on dinner and cocktails with friends in a night- I sure have. What is the price you’d put on confidence?

It’s all well and good if you don’t see value in spending money on your hair, I don’t see value in purchasing a harley- so i’m not going to invest my money into one.

Don’t colour your hair at home. If you’re mixing two products together as you’re colouring your hair at home, it’s a permanent- and that shit is really hard to get out of your hair. If you take short cuts like this attemping to get a salon result, you wont… and then you’ll really appreciate your hairstylist πŸ™‚ but expect a heafty quote. Colour correction/removing colour from hair is a grueling, costly and lengthy process. Expect to pay for this.

Reminder: do not colour your hair at home πŸ™‚

Bottom line. Appreciate your hairstylist. We love our clients, dearly. We really are so lucky to build relationships with such beautiful and trusting human beings that we can catch up with every few months. Be open with your hairstylist, if you aren’t satisfied/would like something tweaked- just call us. We would so much rather make it perfect for you then to have you go elsewhere. Sometimes communication isn’t quite recieved, we’re only human- we’re doing our best!

Thank your hairstylist. Send them an email telling them how happy you are. Recommend them to your friends. Give them a google review. Give them a hug at Christmas time(if covid allows this).

Hairstylists care, a lot

Thank you for reading,

Yours truly, a loving hairstylist x

5 Recomendations for Cairns

Here are 5 things I LOVED doing in one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations:

Eat at Salt House

We had the most amazing dinner here one night. The atmosphere, service and food was incredible. Everything I put in my mouth was so delicious. If you’re into seafood, this is the place!

Drive up to Kuranda

There are a few alternate options in terms of getting to Kuranda. There is a goldola, train or you can drive. We chose to drive and the 40 minute commute was unreal. There was so much to look at along the highway, everything was so lush- the whole experience was just devine. We walked around Kuranda town, there is a butterfly farm and famous markets but we were too late for both unfortunately. Next time. We did have a good amount of time at Barron falls though and highly reccomend. Cairns has alot of rain throughout the year but in January it was FLOWING, probably the biggest waterfall i’ve seen with my own eyes. Such a fun, nature filled and inexpensive day!

Visit Rusty’s markets

You can’t visit Cairns without attending Rusty’s. Its such a great market in the heart of town with an ABUNDANCE of amazing produce. It’s limitless what the locals can grow up in the FNQ area. I think they call this the golden triangle? It’s cheap, a great atmosphere, the food is amazing(visit the vietnamese stall- yum) AND they have the tastiest V GF DF banana bread. A friend raved about this so had to try, can confirm- scrumptious.

Swim at Babinda Boulders

This was probably my favourite swimming spot I had the pleasure of visiting in the Cairns area. We’ve all seen photos of these rock pools online somewhere. And I must say I thought they looked pretty different to what I was expecting, but SO beautiful none the less. I guess with the climate in Cairns and the wild weather they experience these places probably always seem a little different! Which is a bonus. Th water is so clear, very refreshing and the perfect place for a picnic!

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

No matter what it costs or what the weather is doing for the day, get out on the reef. You travel for about 2 hours to get to snorkel/scuba locations but just being out on the water is pure MAGIC. There are so many colours, species of fish and it is all round such a great day. I loved it and would go out 100 times over. The food was so good on the boat also. Remember: suncreen.

Woah writing this makes me want to move up north… what a gorgeous adventure filled area of Australia! Can’t wait to visit again. To a wonderful week x

5 Easy and healthy breakfast ideas!

Breakfast should be both easy and healthy! You don’t want to have to think about too many steps in the morning and you want to start the first meal of your day with something balanced, energising and keep you eating well throughout the day! Here are five breakfasts that I incorperate into my weeks, I hope they inspire you! PS: the measurments will be rough, who has time to measure anyway. And these recipes are just guidelines- use what you have at home πŸ™‚

G R E E N S M O O T H I E

You can literally add anything to smoothies, which I love.

  • A piece of zuchinni
  • One banana, I like atleast 4 chunks of frozen banana- so creamy
  • 2x tablespoons Protein powder of choice
  • 1 cup of milk of choice
  • Few chunks frozen pineapple- I also think this adds to the creamy taste
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  • Optional- spinkle of psyillium husk, chia seeds, flax seeds, PB- anything you want to use up!

Blend everything and if needed add water as you go! This would be super easy to put in a bottle/jar and take with you on your way to work πŸ™‚

C H I A P U D D I N G

  • Few tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 1.5 cups of milk of choice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Top with frozen berries of choice!

Add all ingredients to jar, shake and ready to consume in the morning. I like to add coconut flakes, yum!

P R O T E I N O A T S

  • 1.5 cup oats
  • 1.5 cup milk of choice
  • 1 x tablespoon protein powder
  • 1 x teaspoon PB
  • Water if needed

Put all ingredients in bowl and microwave/stovetop for 90 seconds. Add water if needed. Top with coconut flakes, a drizzle of PB, cacao powder, pepitas or frozen berries. So tasty on cooler mornings!

L O A D E D T O A S T

Create your own sweet or savoury take on toast:

  • Avocado
  • Tomato
  • Feta: optional
  • Pepita/sunflower feeds for added crunch
  • Salt, pepper and chilli flakes to season
  • Peanut or almond butter
  • Honey or maple
  • Sliced banana or strawberry
  • Pepita/sunflower seeds… for added crunch πŸ˜‰
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon

Again, so simple, shouldn’t take anymore than 5 minutes to make and can alter to your taste buds. Plus limited washing up in the mornings.

A C A I B O W L

  • 1 x teaspoon acai powder
  • 1 cup berries of choice, I like blackberries
  • Sprinkle of flax seeds
  • 1x cup milk of choice- less liquid the thicker the consistency, start slow
  • 1x frozen banana
  • Few slices of frozen zuchinni
  • Piece of frozen pineapple
  • 2x teaspoons of protein powder

Blend everything, transfer to bowl with spoon. Top with whatever your heart desires. Drizzle of PB, cashews, granola, berries, chia seeds. Enjoy!

What are your favourite, no fail, delicious breakfasts? I’d love some inspiration too. Have a beautiful week x

Healthy swaps

It’s the little things we impliment that create a healthier lifestyle. Here are a few healthy swaps in my opinion to help us all stay on track:

Greek yoghurt instead of sour cream. I don’t really notice a different tbh on pastas and pizza.

Nuttlex butter oil of plants rather than animal fat- gotta be better for you

Chai tea over chai powder, alot of chai powders are full of fillers aka crap. I’m sure there are healthy alternatives out there though!

Any kind of plant based milk over full cream, there’s a massive debate over alternative milks but as a whole- alot less sugar and most likely higher water content= healthier

Honey or maple over sugar

Matcha (if you can get used to the taste) instead of/to alternate w coffee

Black beans on nacho’s instead of mince- yummmm

Nori sheet as a wrap instead of a bread wrap- lighter and so tasty

Lemon or lime in mineral water if you’re needing something other than water

Let vodka, lime soda’s or seltzers be your choice of alcohol

Use spring onion or cucumbers to dip instead of crackers

Almond or buckwheat flour to replace standard bleached flour

Read a book or a blog(I know a good one- twentysomethingtactics- @tullyjaybudarick) instead of a facebook post!

What are some healthy swaps that have changed your life? Would love some inspiration. To a wonderful week x

30 Day minimalism challenge

I saw this challenge on google and thought ‘this is so up my alley’. There is basically one challenge per day that barely takes 5 minutes. A really productive start to the day and is a push to get those little jobs done that we never get around to.

  1. Purge your wardrobe

I love this one, and a perfect start! Even if its three clothing items- take them to your local thrift shop. Not only your wardrobe will be clearer but also your mind!

2. Clean your handbag

I liked this one too as I never get around to it. I even washed my bag. Felt really organised going to work the next day!

3. Toss out old socks

I LOVED this one too, why do we keep socks for such a long time? I threw a few pairs out and treated myself with 3x new, much better quality pairs! Wooohoo

4. Get rid of digital devices

I don’t understand the root of this question but what I took from this was… a day without social media. I’m already pretty disciplined as I wouldn’t say im constantly on my phone anyway and rarely sleep with my phone in my room. But this felt good.

5. Empty your wallet

This could also have a few possible meanings. I cleaned mine out and got rid of old cards. But it could also mean donate. I am going to donate $5 to Livin’ now πŸ™‚

6. Write your best friends qualities

I wrote down my partners best qualities and it probably made me happier than it made him but its really cool to see what you love most about someone on paper

7. Write your best qualities

It’s funny that we struggle to compliment ourselves. A few things I appreciate about myself: I am a great friend, I am an optimist, I love that I care for our environment, I have good self discipline and I love my teeth and my smile(thx mum and dad :))

8. Write for 20 minutes

This was super lovely in the morning, whether its mumbo jumbo/ the spelling is incorrect it doesn’t matter because NO ONE is going to read it. I’d love to start a dream journal, maybe I’ll keep one beside my bed and attempt to write when I have wild dreams!

9. Donate old books

I love book swapping and donating old books. I wouldn’t often re-read a book so why not pass our favourite reads on πŸ™‚

10. Ditch makeup for the day

Woohoo I love this. I wouldn’t often wear makeup when im not working but I would have stuggled with this years ago. I am now so much more comfortable in my own skin and that feels really powerful.

11. Meditate on your day

This day I went to a sound healing! It was auch an incredible experience. I have been working on my meditation parctice and it sure has paid off- being able to lay in a dark room for an hour! Highly recommend sound healings. The instruments sound amazing, I felt super rejuvinated and slept very well.

12. Spend time with loved ones

I’d like to think I do this daily/ when I have the chance but I made extra effort to call a few family members on this day. Life is all about the people we surround ourselves with and I feel SO lucky with my chosen ones <3

13. Write a gratitude log

Once again, I’d say I practice this daily but for today I wrote what I was grateful for and WHY. I chose matcha: lucky to have an alternitave that I enjoy other than coffee. My bed: it is so comfortable and makes me feel at home, and my family: lucky to be related to such loving, friendly and genuine people!

14. Evaluate your last 5 purchases

This was a cool activity. Doing this weekly would reduce a few spendings I think. Mine were: groceries, wine, a power bill, 2x festival tickets and a DiDi….. can you tell which were wants and which were needs, lol……

15. Stay offline for the day

Turned my phone off! Felt damn good. Should even start doing this 1 day per week

16. Don’t spend money for 24 hours

This felt great! Didn’t struggle at all. Would love to have a few days like this every week

17. Don’t complain all day

I attempted this over two days and tried to be really concious of my wording. I think this is a great thing to remind ourselves every morning!

18. Go without your phone

Turned my phone off for the day/ have been leaving it at home more. We’ve just gone into a three day lockdown so i’m going to have another phone free day during this time πŸ™‚

19. Venture outdoors

Went on a hike with a friend! Never regret getting outside

20. Create a relaxing space

This day I put lavender my diffuser, cleaned my room and had a chill yoga sesh. So relaxing after work.

21. Re-evalute your to do list

Priorotised what is most important, and always get these things done first thing

22. De-clutter your storage

Can’t say I have alot to store, but cleaned out my wardrobe- again will be tackling a few cupboads over these next few days

23. Empty your junk drawer

Did this, why do we all have atleast one of these? How many pens does a person need?

24. Turn off notifications

I don’t have any anyway, woo.

25. Batch cook your meals

I had a Sunday bake day. I made a dhal, zuchinni and lemon loaf, granola and bliss balls. Feels good to have healthy snacks in the fridge.

26. Get all your errands done today

Got a few things done I’d been putting off- went to bed feeling super satisfied this day

27. Eliminate a toxic relationship

I honestly can’t say I have any toxic friends/relationships- and this makes me happy πŸ™‚

28. Clear out your makeup collection

I did this with all of my bathroom cabinet, and it felt very refreshing!

29. Say no to something

I’ve been saying no to everything I don’t want to do this year πŸ™‚ and it feels amazing

30. Re-purge your wardrobe

Done and done, with pleasure

Meditation as your medication

We all stuggle to meditate right at the very beginning and unless you were a monk in the womb, you’ve probably found meditating time consuming, ‘boring’ and difficult. Here are my top tips for really putting in the effort and making the most of those 5-10 minutes of pure bliss.

Airpods/headphones

These will really help too tune into a guided meditation and block out any outside noise. If you’re like me and you live in a city- you’ll need some head phones. Amps up the experience 100%.

YouTube

Youtube has it all. I love Bob Baker and Jason Stephenson. Both have soft, soothing voices and shorter videos which is less intimidating as you are starting out. Their voices make me really happy.

A blanket/comfortable clothes

Wrap anything you like around you. Sit on your couch, bedroom floor etc and just get comfortable. Whatever floats your boat- works.

Diffuse or put on something that smells good/relaxes you

If some peppermint or lavender oil on your body lets you know its time to slow down/meditate- do that

Attempt to practice first thing in the morning

This is a major one. If we leave this until later in the day, I personally find that post looking at screens/ being at work I have so much more on my mind and it’s alot harder to detach these thoughts. The less stimulated we are when we first sit down to make the most of being in the moment- the better.

It’s a journey thats for sure. No one is perfect or a professional. But there are so many scientifically proven benefits to meditating daily, no matter how small. Reading is also great for practicing to be in the moment.

These blogs are so spiratic these days, thanks for sticking with me πŸ™‚ to a wonderful week. Tully x
